A Deeper Path to Repair — When You Need More Than a Weekly Session Can Give
Some patterns don’t shift in fifty minutes a week. If you and your partner are stuck in the same fight, drifting apart, recovering from a betrayal, or standing at a crossroads about your future together, a couples therapy intensive offers something weekly therapy can’t: sustained, uninterrupted time to actually get somewhere.
Instead of spending the first fifteen minutes of every session re-explaining what happened since last week, you and your partner sit down for several concentrated hours (or a full day) with a therapist whose only job, for that block of time, is your relationship. It’s therapy without the stop-and-start.
We offer couples therapy intensives at our Kirkwood and Grant Park offices in Atlanta, GA. You may also see this format called a marriage intensive, a couples intensive, or a couples therapy retreat — the work is much the same, though ours is held in-office rather than as a residential getaway.
Why Couples Choose an Intensive
- You’re in crisis and can’t wait two weeks between sessions to address what’s happening.
- You’ve tried weekly couples therapy before and felt like you never had enough time to get below the surface.
- One or both of you travel often, or you live in different cities, and a recurring weekly slot isn’t realistic.
- You want a reset — a defined container to rebuild trust, communication, or intimacy, rather than an open-ended commitment.
- A major decision is on the table: staying or leaving, having children, an affair, a move, blending families.
What’s Included
Every intensive is customized to your relationship, but generally includes:
- Individual pre-intensive intake calls with each partner, so sensitive history can be shared privately before you’re in the room together.
- Extended, focused session time: options typically range from a half-day (3–4 hours) to a full weekend, depending on what you’re working through.
- A structured but flexible process: moving between joint work, brief individual check-ins, and skill-building, rather than one long unbroken conversation.
- A concrete take-home plan: specific tools, language, and agreements to practice once you leave the room.
- An optional follow-up session a few weeks later, to check in on how the new patterns are holding.
Featured Program: The RLT Relationship Bootcamp
Our signature intensive is built on Relational Life Therapy (RLT), Terry Real’s direct, no-nonsense approach to couples work. RLT doesn’t tiptoe around the hard stuff — it names unhealthy patterns plainly and gives both partners a shared, honest language for what’s actually happening between them.
In practice that means your therapist coaches actively in the moment rather than only reflecting after the fact, each partner gets real one-on-one time alongside the joint work, and you leave with concrete tools — the feedback wheel, the five losing strategies, and repair skills for infidelity, resentment, and emotional shutdown.
Amy Robbins is a Certified RLT Practitioner. See our upcoming RLT Relationship Bootcamps for dates, format, and pricing.
Who This Is For
A couples therapy intensive or the RLT Bootcamp can help whether you’re:
- Newly struggling and want to get ahead of bigger problems
- Deep in gridlock after years of the same argument
- Rebuilding after infidelity or another breach of trust
- Facing a “stay or go” decision and want clarity before deciding
- Long-distance, high-travel, or otherwise unable to do weekly sessions
- Simply wanting a strong tune-up before a wedding, a move, or a new chapter
Note: Intensives are not designed for situations involving active domestic violence, ongoing substance use crises, or acute mental health emergencies. If this describes your situation, we’ll help connect you with the right level of care.
What to Expect Afterward
Couples consistently describe leaving an intensive with:
- A shared, specific understanding of the pattern that’s been running the relationship
- Language they can actually use in the heat of an argument
- A concrete plan — not just insight, but next steps
- Either renewed clarity to keep going together, or clarity that ending the relationship is the healthier path
Many couples pair an intensive with a short series of weekly follow-up sessions to reinforce what was built.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is this the same as regular couples therapy, just longer? Not quite. The extended time allows for a different kind of work — we can move through a full arc (surface issue → underlying pattern → practice → repair) in one sitting instead of across many disconnected weeks.
Do we need to already agree on wanting to stay together? No. Some couples come in unsure, and that’s okay. The goal is clarity and honest communication, not a predetermined outcome.
What if only one of us is willing to come? We offer individual intensives as well, which can still meaningfully shift the relationship even if your partner isn’t ready to join yet.
Is RLT confrontational? RLT is direct, but always delivered with care and respect. The goal is to interrupt harmful patterns quickly and honestly — not to shame either partner.
